Opioid Addiction Treatment: A Guide for Patients, Families, and Friends

Lesedauer: 4 Minuten

Strategies to improve retention are needed across all forms of medication-based treatment. A person may need a treatment approach that addresses both mental health and substance use disorders if both conditions are occurring together. The person’s environment and access to supportive family members and friends can also play important roles.

Because CM relies on having “rewards,” the question of who exactly will fund these rewards arises. Models in France and the UK have shown that community donations may be an effective solution as a primary source of funds. Research has shown that although CM may have a higher up-front initial cost, it may actually be more cost-effective in regard to patient outcomes over the long term [33].

Medical Treatments for Opioid Addiction

Suboxone also contains naloxone, an opioid “blocker” that has little to no effect when dissolved orally but is included to deter people from misusing or abusing Suboxone. Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone) is a prescription medication that you dissolve sublingually (under the tongue) or buccally (against your inner cheek). Clinical trials of buprenorphine/naloxone have proven effective in treating OUD. The details of the initial treatment plan will vary depending on the specific opioid the person is stopping or withdrawing from and whether that opioid is short-acting or long-acting. In 2021, West Virginia had the highest rate of opioid overdoses in the United States, with 91 out of every 100,000 citizens experiencing an overdose that year.

Once the drugs are out of the person’s system, continuing treatment is recommended to avoid relapse ― resuming opioid use after quitting. Opioid use disorder is a complex disease, and treatment works best when tailored to the individual. There is not a single approach that works well for everyone, and a person may try several therapies before finding the ones that support lasting recovery. Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a complex illness characterized by compulsive use of opioid drugs even when the person wants to stop, or when using the drugs negatively affects the person’s physical and emotional well-being. Treatment is provided through a combination of various types of groups using different counseling techniques to address coping skills, trauma, grief, anger management, communication skills, and relapse prevention.

Medication for Opioid Addiction

When people enter treatment, addiction has often caused serious consequences in their lives, possibly disrupting their health and how they function in their family lives, at work, and in the community. Different types of medications may be useful at different stages of treatment to help a patient stop abusing drugs, stay in treatment, and avoid relapse. Additionally, medications are used to help people detoxify from drugs, although detoxification is not the same as treatment and is not sufficient to help a person recover. Detoxification alone without subsequent treatment generally leads to resumption of drug use.

what are some forms of treatment for opioid addiction

Opioids are effective painkillers, but they can also be addictive, and the U.S. remains in the grip of an opioid use disorder crisis. While it is not known exactly how many overdoses occur each year, because not all patients will seek or receive medical help, there are around 130,000 opiate users in Britain, officials believe. Free drug overdose kits will be given to friends and family of addicts to tackle the opioid epidemic under plans unveiled today. Yafai added that the study did correctly conclude that people may be unable to use cannabis effectively on their own to stop the cycle of opiate addiction. One doctor and cannabis expert told Medical News Today the study was far too unwieldy with not enough control factors to draw any real conclusions.

Final thoughts on comprehensive addiction treatment

Buprenorphine and methadone are currently the most widely prescribed pharmacological opioid treatments and have been shown to have the highest efficacy in clinical trials [11]. Motivation is the most important psychological predictor of effective treatment for opioid addiction. If someone is not motivated to quit opioids, they are at a high risk of relapse which in turn puts them at greater risk of death by overdose.

  • If you want to try the method, find a therapist who is qualified in hypnotherapy.
  • Illicit opioids are a variety of drugs, including heroin, that are common for recreational or nonmedical use.
  • You’ll experience withdrawal symptoms if you have developed physical dependence on opioids due to OUD and suddenly stop taking the drug.
  • Therefore, a person should consider contacting a doctor if they are concerned about any side effects they are experiencing from them.

Treatment can include supportive measures to ease symptoms and help ensure the person is safe, including administering methadone or buprenorphine. People with substance use disorders may go to hospital emergency rooms because they are in crisis due to physical or emotional distress. Most hospitals provide an evaluation and assess the patient’s primary need, and then opioid addiction treatment connect the patient to treatment. The hospital may admit someone who also has a significant medical problem in addition to the opioid use disorder. A Swedish study compared  patients maintained on 16 mg of buprenorphine daily to a control group that received buprenorphine for detoxification (6 days) followed by placebo.25 All patients received psychosocial supports.
